The Perfect Summer Evening

July 16, 2010

In June, shortly after we moved, we bought a BBQ.

In the first week we used it almost every other night. We’ve already had friends over for a BBQ party despite the fact that the house is still in boxes. Tonight we’re BBQing salmon. Did I mention we love our BBQ? It’s not just the BBQ that is awesome, it’s the whole setting of eating outdoors. Our new place came with an old picnic table and every time we dress it up with a red and white checkered table cloth,  candles, and glass pitchers, beer mugs, and tall drinks that capture the evening sun in the most perfect ways. Then we sit down together, laugh over how we fill our hot dogs and hamburger buns too full with fixings, talk about our days, but mostly just sit and enjoy each others company. After dinner, if the weather is nice, we just sit out on the picnic table. Mike holds a beer in one hand, and I hold a glass of wine. We smile as we watch the birds flit around the bird house our neighbour has, or wave to people who pass by our back alleyway.

Those are the perfect kind summer evenings for me.

This post makes me smile. I just love having dinner (or breakfast or lunch) out on our deck. The shade, the breeze, the green of our yard, freshly made food, and the pleasure of good company all combine to make each time memorable.
